This program is designed to increase a mother's confidence in her ability to give birth. While the focus is on understanding Pregnancy, Labor, Postpartum challenges and Breastfeeding, it is also structured around the Lamaze breathing techniques, which helps pregnant women understand how to cope with pain in ways that both facilitate labor and promote comfort, including relaxation techniques, positions and massage.
This program is named after Dr Fernand Lamaze, a pioneer in Natural Childbirth, who was a French Obstetrician practicing in Paris. His breathing technique is based on Pavlov’s experiment of building a conditioned reflex. When women consciously and regularly practiced this breathing in pregnancy, they created an automatic response of spontaneously learnt breathing when labor began. Dr Lamaze learned of this technique’s efficacy in providing painless deliveries during a conference in Russia in 1953. He returned to France and taught the breathing to the Western World. It became popularly referred to as Lamaze Breathing.
